Try these rich and fudgy red velvet brownies topped with cream cheese frosting! Perfect for holidays or any time you want a unique dessert.

  • Total Time: 43 minutes
  • Yield: 9-12 brownies 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • Ingredients for Red Velvet Brownies:
  • ⅔ cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 2 large eggs (at room temperature)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon red food coloring (or 1 teaspoon red food gel coloring)
  • Ingredients for Cream Cheese Frosting:
  • ⅓ cup unsalted butter (at room temperature)
  • 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese (at room temperature)
  • ½ cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • Pinch of fine sea salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat and prep: Start by preheating your oven to 350°F. Grease an 8×8-inch baking dish (or line it with parchment paper for easy removal).
  2. Melt the butter: Melt the butter in the microwave or on the stovetop. Let it cool slightly so it doesn’t scramble the eggs when mixed in.
  3. Mix dry ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Set this aside.
  4. Combine wet ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk the eggs, then add the sugar, vanilla, vinegar, and red food coloring. Mix until everything is smooth and well-combined. Slowly pour in the melted butter, mixing as you go.
  5. Bring it all together: Add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, and mix on low speed until just combined. Be careful not to overmix – a few small lumps are okay.
  6. Bake: Spread the batter evenly into your prepared pan, smoothing the top with a spatula. Bake for 28 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs. Let the brownies cool in the pan on a wire rack.
  7. Make the frosting: In a mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese and butter together until smooth. Add powdered sugar and mix on low until it’s mostly incorporated, then increase the speed to medium-high and beat until fluffy. Add a splash of vanilla and a pinch of salt, then mix one last time.
  8. Frost and serve: Once the brownies are completely cool, spread the cream cheese frosting over the top. Cut into squares, serve, and enjoy every bite!

Notes

If you have leftovers (if!), store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. The frosting stays fresh and delicious chilled, and the brownies hold up well. When you’re ready to enjoy one, you can let it come to room temperature or warm it slightly in the microwave for 10-15 seconds. Just be careful not to melt the frosting!
